The date palm plays a very important role in Figuig. It represents almost the entire flore. The date palm is the undisputed main resource since life began in the oasis. The first thing one sees upon entering Ifyyiy is date palm forests that at first glance suggest the main charasteristic of the city: the country of dates.


Scientific Definitions:

Scientifically, date palm is classified as a monocotyledonous plant, which consists of one single root. The date palm is part of the Palmaceae family (Phoenix dactylifera). At the top of the tree there is what is called: the bud, which is responsible for the elongation of the palm, its shape resembles a conical and round dome. Teh age of the palm is estimated by the length of the trunk and the arrangement of the fronds.

A raceme: consists of several small, thin branches called: date bunches. Each bunch has several dates stuck by stems around it.


Different types of dates in Ifyyiy (Figuig) :

There are diffirent types of dates in Ifyyiy that can be divided into two parts according to importance:

The first category:

With the best quality, and it consists of palms that grow by planting a sapling. This sapling is a small stump It is adjasent to thje palm tree, it is uprooted and then planted in another place. In this way, the dates of the new palm will be similar to the dates of the mother palm.
